How do I select the right sword for me?

E-mail Print PDF
There are 2 primary factors to bear in mind : the length of the blade and its weight distribution.  Now, we're talking carbon steel swords here, and not those wooden types.  If you seriously want to practice the sword, not just to look pretty but for its martial/strength benefits, you would be practicing with a steel sword.  It's also for the practical reason that you will be improving your wrist power and flexibility with a heavier steel sword than a wood one.

LENGTH. To find out the right length for yourself, flip the sword against the back of your arm. Use your elbow to jut out the sword blade a little.  The ideal length would be that the tip of the blade should come up to your ear.

WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION.  This is to check that the sword is crafted properly for a balanced equilibrium.  As a rule of thumb, the equilibrium point should be at one quarter point of the entire length of the sword, including the handle.  For those who are experienced in sword training, you will be able to do the jianhua very smoothly if you get a sword that is well-balanced.

There's one last factor which is the rebound spring of the steel tip when you depress the tip against the sole of your foot.  You should be able to get a good spring back when you release it.  Please do this under the guidance of your instructor okay?  We don't anyone getting hurt here.  This is more for competition purposes where you need to doujian!
